We are sometimes taught that fear is a natural part of life – that it is a defense mechanism that can keep us out of harm’s way and make us aware of possible dangers. While this is true to a certain extent, fear is not at all beneficial or healthy when it stops us from enjoying every day life, or causes us to miss out on exciting opportunities. It’s therefore important to know how to rid fear from our lives so that we can live to the fullest.
Identify Your Triggers and Know Your Reactions
The feeling of fear may be very similar for everyone, but the triggers are unique for each person. What are your triggers? You need to know what your unique fears are to be able to deal with them most effectively.
You’ll never know how to rid fear unless you can identify how you react to it too. Again, this differs for everybody. Maybe you are the type of person who runs and hides, who avoids their fear at all costs. Maybe you are the type of person that will freeze up completely.
If you fear is public speaking, and you have a work meeting you have to speak at, do you phone in sick and spend extra money you don’t even have on a doctor’s note? Or do you go to the meeting and then tremble and stutter nervously? Either way, you know that you fear is interfering in your work, and once you can exactly learn your responses to fear, you can effectively alter those responses to be healthier and more beneficial to you.
Find the Coping Methods Needed
This is where the real difference to your life comes in! Coping methods are attitudes and practices that help us alter or replace our negative fear responses. Coping methods are extremely powerful for this exact reason. Let’s look at the example above for clarification. Instead of phoning in sick to avoid the meeting, and instead of putting yourself through even more stress and pressure by caving into your fears during the meeting, you’ll find a coping method that helps you confront your fear and do your best.
In this example, you may start attending a public speaking class, or start practicing your speech in front of a trusted friend. You could practice breathing exercises that help you keep your focus during your presentation, or start meditation techniques that help calm you before the meeting. There is such a wide range of coping methods one could practice, and you may need to explore a few options before finding what works best for you. The important part is that you practice these coping methods consistently, so that they become second nature in helping you combat your fear.
Attitude is Key
Even if you aren’t a spiritual person, you may have heard of having a spirit of love and faith instead of a spirit of fear. This powerful teaching and concept can work wonders in your life when you put it to practice. When you focus on fearful thoughts, you set yourself up for the same consequences. You’ll never do new things because of fear; you will never grow or learn or achieve just because of the fear taking control of your thoughts.
But if you block fearful thoughts, and cast them out so to speak, you open up room in your life for something far more awesome – faith! Tell yourself that you can instead of you can’t. Tell yourself that you are confident instead of insecure. Tell yourself that you will succeed instead of fail. When you start to believe more in yourself, and listen to the voice that encourages you and supports you, the most amazing changes will start to take place.
Always be patient with yourself when you’re working on how to rid fear from your life. These fearful attitudes have been with you for many years in all likelihood. Be kind to yourself by allowing yourself the space and time you need to grow, and to find encouragement and support from the ones you love and trust.
